Adolescence is a period of transition from childhood to adulthood, an age of 10 to19, an important time as it sets the stage for adulthood. Dynamic and continued development in every aspect of a adolescents’s life means they have distinct needs in terms of health.  Issues faced by young girls can range from nutritional (malnutrition as well as obesity), menstrual and sexual health as well care of mental well being Dr Rachna believes that the right approach is the discussion of issues  ranging from  irregular periods to PCOS and hormonal disturbances to skin aliments like acne or facial hair  and then proper individualized guidance for their management.

The immunization is one of the most important, most beneficial and cost-effective disease prevention measures that can be provided for adolescents. There are a number of vaccines available for adolescents including TdaP, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B ,Flu vaccine etc.

Polycystic ovarian syndrome or disease (PCOS/PCOD) is a hormonal disorder that affects women in their reproductive age and it is seen in 1 out of 10 women in their childbearing age. . Along with havoc in female hormonal control, ovaries release abnormal amounts of androgen (male hormones). This may results in irregular or prolonged menstrual periods, excessive body hair, acne and hair loss, obesity and difficulty in conception.

While there is no certain known cause there are various investigations which help in diagnosing PCOS. The treatment lies in managing various aspects including lifestyle modification, medications for regularizing periods, and taking care of fertility challenges


Having regular menstrual periods is a sign that your body is working well. Menstrual irregularity may range from having very heavy periods to irregular and scanty periods, these all may be indicative of significant health issues any may need detailed investigations for proper management.

Dysmenorrhea or Pain during periods can be challenging issues with adolescents. Some women may get just a feeling of heaviness in the abdomen or tugging in the pelvic area. Other may experience severe cramps. Usually the pain of Primary dysmenorrhea gets resolved by the OTC pain relievers.

In case of any pathology causing, secondary dysmenorrhea, more extensive investigations may be required to rule out conditions like uterine fibroids, endometriosis and ovarian cysts

HPV Vaccine

The HPV (human papillomavirus) vaccine is offered to girls aged 12 to 13 to help protect them against cervical cancer. The vaccine protects against two types of the virus which cause over 70 per cent of cervical cancer cases.

For the best protection against HPV, the vaccine is given before sexual activity usually starts. Given as a course of three injections (after the age of 12 yr ),it is proving to provide lifelong immunity against the cervical cancer and has been causative  in the  drastic fall of the new cervical cancer rates
